Academic and Language Acquisition Institute

The Academic and Language Acquisition Institute is a specialized professional learning experience designed to build the capacity of educators and instructional leaders who support the academic and linguistic success of students, particularly Emergent Bilinguals. This Institute provides a focused space for participants to deepen their understanding of high-quality instruction, strengthen their ability to support teachers, and refine the systems and practices necessary to ensure students thrive academically and linguistically.

The Institute is designed for district and campus administrators, instructional leaders, support staff, program coordinators, and lead teachers who play a critical role in guiding instruction and strengthening educational outcomes. It is especially valuable for those responsible for supporting teachers, monitoring instructional effectiveness, and ensuring that students receive the intentional academic and language support they need to be successful in school and beyond.

What Is the Academic and Language Acquisition Institute?

The Academic and Language Acquisition Institute is an intentional learning experience centered on the connection between strong instruction and language development. It is grounded in the understanding that students, especially those developing English and academic language, need educators who are equipped with the knowledge, strategies, and leadership capacity to provide meaningful, high-quality instructional support.

This Institute goes beyond surface-level professional development. It creates an opportunity for educational leaders and teacher-support personnel to deeply explore the practices, structures, and instructional approaches that strengthen teaching and learning for students who must develop both academic content knowledge and language proficiency at the same time.

Participants engage in learning that helps them better understand how to support teachers in delivering instruction that is rigorous, responsive, language-rich, and aligned to the needs of diverse learners.

Purpose of the Institute

The purpose of the Academic and Language Acquisition Institute is to strengthen the ability of educational leaders and support personnel to guide and sustain instructional practices that positively impact student achievement and language development.

The Institute exists to help participants:

  • deepen their understanding of effective academic and linguistic instructional practices

  • increase their capacity to supervise, coach, and support teachers of Emergent Bilinguals and other diverse learners

  • strengthen systems that promote instructional quality and program effectiveness

  • connect leadership actions to classroom impact and student outcomes

  • build coherence between academic expectations and language support across campuses and districts

At its core, the Institute recognizes that student success is closely tied to the quality of instructional leadership and support that educators receive. When leaders and teacher-support personnel understand what strong academic and language instruction looks like, they are better prepared to help teachers implement it consistently and effectively.

Building long-term program strength
The learning extends beyond a single event by helping districts and campuses strengthen the systems, support structures, and leadership practices needed for sustained success.

Why This Institute Matters

The work of supporting academic and language acquisition is too important to leave to chance. Students who are learning academic content while also developing language proficiency require educators who are prepared, intentional, and well-supported. This means campuses and districts must have leaders who understand how to guide instruction in ways that are both academically rigorous and linguistically responsive.

The Academic and Language Acquisition Institute matters because it helps educational leaders move beyond general support and toward targeted, informed leadership that directly impacts teaching and learning. It provides the kind of professional development that builds confidence, sharpens leadership, and empowers educators to better serve students whose success depends on both strong academics and strong language development.

Who Should Attend?

The Institute is ideal for:

  • district administrators

  • campus administrators

  • bilingual and ESL directors

  • instructional coaches

  • support staff

  • coordinators

  • lead teachers

  • teacher leaders responsible for supporting instruction and student growth

Anyone responsible for improving instructional quality, supporting teachers, or strengthening outcomes for Emergent Bilinguals and other diverse learners will benefit from this experience.

A Meaningful Investment in Educational Excellence

The Academic and Language Acquisition Institute is more than a professional development event—it is an investment in the knowledge, leadership, and systems needed to improve instruction and transform student outcomes.

Participants leave with deeper insight, stronger capacity, and a clearer understanding of how to support teaching that advances both academic success and language acquisition. In turn, districts and campuses are better positioned to create learning environments where all students, especially Emergent Bilinguals, can thrive.

When educational leaders strengthen their capacity to support instruction, they strengthen the future success of the students they serve.
